How To Start A Blog And Make Money Blogging

On a regular basis, I get asked exactly how to start a blog and make money blogging.

The first thing I tell them is that it definitely takes hard work and effort.  Blogging is not a “get rich quick” option.

If you’re up to the challenge though, it can be a rewarding experience.

Starting a blog may seem a bit overwhelming at first, especially if you are brand new to blogging and not sure where to begin.

This post is going to walk you through getting started with a strong foundation, which you need before you can start to make money blogging.

Mini Lesson #1: Get Your Blogging Advice From The Experts

It’s easy to become intimidated by the information overload available online. Just about every blogger is offering advice and tips on how to start a blog.

Get your information about blogging from people that specialize in blogging and content marketing. There are a ton of great resources available from experts on the topic of growing a successful blog.

So why should you trust me?

Since 2017, I’ve been a professional blogging coach and I write a ton of content about how to start a blog and make money blogging.  I specialize in helping new bloggers avoid frustration and information overload by providing personalized coaching. I also spend countless hours every day focusing on the most up-to-date blogging tips for readers of my other blog, Next Level Blogging.

Mini Lesson #2: Free Isn’t Better!

There are so many advertisements available for “free” and “easy” blogging platforms, that it may seem reasonable to choose one of these options, such as Medium, Tumblr, Blogger, or Blogspot.

However, if you are ultimately planning to become a career blogger, or want to make money with your blog, choosing one of these options is a huge mistake.

It’s best to start off on the right track from the beginning, and it will save you precious time and energy in the long run.

Yes, these options are “free”, but as you will learn in this post, you can start a blog like the pros for less than $10!

Mini Lesson #3: First Impressions Matter

Even if you’re just getting started as a blogger, it’s important for you to present yourself as a professional from the beginning.

Keep in mind that everyone that reads one of your blog posts or visits your website is actually a potential customer.   Having a professional-looking website and providing informative blog posts with a clean layout, will make a great first impression.

The free platforms are tempting, promising templates that allow you to design a clean layout for your pages and posts.

What they don’t mention, is each time you share a link from your blog, you are promoting their website on search engines instead of your own.

Technically, your blog belongs to them, NOT YOU.

Brand yourself, even from the beginning. That way when you do start selling your amazing products and services, you’ve already built a professional reputation.

Now, let’s get into the real meat of this post.

1. Obtain A Domain Name That Matches Your Blog Name

The first step towards looking like a pro, and one of the easiest, is obtaining your own custom domain.

Notice that my web address is, and not

Having a custom domain is an important part of establishing authority.

How To Choose A Name For Your Blog

You’ll want your blog name to match your domain name.  There are a few things to consider if you are planning to become a career blogger.

Take some time to consider your niche, and brainstorm a list of possible names for your blog that will make sense to your readers, and potential customers.

Here are a few tips when choosing your custom domain name:

  • Choose a blog name that is easy to remember, by making it short and to the point.
  • Choose a blog name that is easy to spell.
  • Choose a .com domain name, if available, since it is the most common.  If a reader can’t remember your exact domain name, their first guess will be “yourblogname” .com.

2. Choose Web Hosting For Your Blog

Since you also need web hosting for your blog, choose a plan that includes a free domain.

Choosing A Web Host

When choosing a web host, I always suggest reading customer reviews and making a call to their customer support team.

By doing so, you will have an idea of what to expect if you ever have problems with your new blog.

Here are a few things to look for when choosing a web host:

  • Reliability
  • Customer Satisfaction Guarantee
  • 24/7 Customer Support
  • Ease of use – 1-click WordPress Install
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Competitive Pricing

Dreamhost – My Recommended Web Host

The Savvy Ginger website is hosted by Dreamhost.

As I mentioned, I’ve been doing this since 2017, so I’ve tried other web hosting providers – Hostgator, IPage, and Siteground.  I won’t get into the details of why I moved away from each of them, I’ll just tell you that Dreamhost is the best option.

I have their WordPress Unlimited package which is perfect for new bloggers!

With IPage WordPress Essentials,  you’ll get:

  • Free .com domain
  • Unlimited WordPress websites
  • Free automated website migration
  • Unlimited email addresses @domain
  • Unlimited traffic
  • Fast SSD storage
  • WordPress expert support
  • Free SSL certificate

Dreamhost has earned my business for life!  I currently have 5 websites hosted on this plan and the cost is amazing.

You’ll only pay $2.95/month for everything Dreamhost has to offer in the Unlimited plan!

Their WordPress experts have helped me on more than one occasion- even at 3 a.m. Nothing beats great customer support, especially when you’re not very tech-savvy.

3. Install WordPress With One Click

Now that you’ve purchased your domain and chosen a web hosting company, it’s time to install WordPress.  Dreamhost offers a 1-Click WordPress Install, which makes this step easy for you.

4. Customize Your Blog

Your WordPress blog is now ready to customize, and you can start creating your pages and posts using the default WordPress theme.

If you don’t like the default theme, choose from a wide variety of free themes.  My favorite free WordPress themes for bloggers are:

  • Astra
  • OceanWP
  • GeneratePress
  • Neve
  • Blocksy

After you choose your theme, you can customize your blog even more with plugins.

WordPress offers thousands of free plugins to help design your blog, create content, and drive traffic to your new website and blog.

There’s a lot more to making money with a blog than what I’ve covered in this post. But, if you followed my advice, you’re off to a great start.

The best advice I can give you about being successful at blogging is to:

  1. Choose a blog niche you’re passionate about.
  2. Understand who your target audience is.

If you have those two things down, writing great content for your blog should come rather naturally.
